Welcome to the Section of Family Planning Research Website The Section of Family Planning Research Program is committed to advancing knowledge in the field of family planning that will ultimately improve the health and quality of life of women of all races, cultures and economic backgrounds. Our research program includes both clinical trials and community-based research. The overarching goals of our clinical research program is to improve access to, availability and acceptability of contraceptives and family planning options for women and to enhance clinical research participation among women who have limited access to contraceptive methods. We conduct clinical trials related to the development of new contraceptive methods, as well as the evaluation of existing methods in an effort to improve contraceptive use behaviors among women at risk for unintended pregnancy. Hand-in-hand with our clinical trials, our community-based research program aims to better understand contraceptive attitudes and use among vulnerable populations disproportionately at risk of unintended pregnancy, such as women and men of color and low socioeconomic status, adolescents, and women with unfulfilled postpartum sterilization requests. With funding from the National Institutes of Health and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists we use qualitative and quantitative research methods to better understand how diverse populations view sexuality, reproductive health, childbearing, abortion and contraception. Researchers also conduct systematic reviews on pregnancy and substance abuse related topics. The Section of Family Planning at the University of Chicago was created in 2005. Our staff consists of Family Planning faculty and fellows, a research manager, clinical research coordinators, and community-based study coordinators.
